Artist Statement:
My project idea is to take an in-depth dive into the complexities of layers. I have extensively researched the ways layers play a role in creating powerful photography. The concept began with the curiosity of double exposure images. Yet, I want to broaden out that technique to include the different areas of layering. I am using a mix of film and digital photography to explore the merging of two subjects. Most of the shots will include a person as the subject then a corresponding layer that includes a piece of nature or special design. Film photography has inspired me to show a different perspective of what may be. I want to present what makes us individuals, and why that can include different meanings/messages.

Reflection of Critique & Focus/Exploration for Next Steps
The critique session helped me to figure out where my focus needs to be for the next shooting session. Unfortunately, it is going to be difficult having to review my images when I start working with film, but I can strengthen the techniques with digital for them to be better when I transition media. A new idea from a peer: look at the pose/gesture of each of the subjects. (ig. An image with Paige contained two faces where one looked “tired” and the other was diligently studying). There are some limitations with this project especially due to the film color producing black and white. However, that gives me time to truly focus on highlights and shadows so I can have the most clarity on film. I have two separate ideas to work with double exposure/layers. The first is to expose twice while in the darkroom with different filters or focus. Second, I can print on a film piece (after developing) so I can have the second layer be in color which would give me more room for edits. Finally, my plan is to shoot two images (two layers) per each “entire photo” to explore what direction I see the project headed.
